March 7

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Alexandria

Kick off the St. Patrick’s Day festivities a little early with Alexandria’s classic St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The fun starts at 10: 30 a.m. in Old Town Alexandria as costumed dogs compete to win Best Human/Canine Lookalike, Most St. Paddy’s Day Spirit and other awards. Irish dancers, the Notre Dame alumni band, pipe and drum bands and historical re-enactors will be among the participants in the parade, which starts at 12:30 p.m. at King and Alfred Streets.

March 27 - 29

National Capital Area Cake Show

Sterling

If you’re an avid viewer of TV’s caking baking competition shows, you’ll love the National Capital Cake Area Show, held at the Executive Conference and Training Center in Sterling on March 27 through 29. As you wander through amazing cake and cookie displays, you’ll also be given the opportunity to try a few samples. The cake show also features free demonstrations, hands-on classes, raffles and tours.

Bluebells at the Bend Festival

Great Falls

As the weather grows warmer, Virginia bluebells and other wildflowers cover the ground at Riverbend Park in Great Falls. Bluebells at the Bend Festival celebrates spring and the re-appearance of the bluebells with wildflower walks, face painting, crafts, games, music, wagon rides, a puppet show, moon bounce and an obstacle course.

Manassas Regional Airport

Watch planes, helicopters and sky divers execute daring feats and maneuvers during the popular Manassas Air Show. Admission and parking are free, but donations will be accepted and benefit three local charities. Guests will also be able to explore on-ground aircraft displays.

May 15 - 17

Spring Wine Festival and Sunset Tour

Mt. Vernon

Learn about the founding father’s wine making skills and see the cellar where George Washington stored his wine during Mt. Vernon’s Spring Wine Festival and Sunset Tour at 6 p.m on May 15 through 17. You’ll also sample wines made in Virginia and enjoy appearances from Martha Washington and other historical figures.

Order a fruit and cheese box when you buy your tickets or buy a crab cake sandwich, chicken kabob or pulled pork with coleslaw at the Mt. Vernon concession stand.

PNC Parkway Classic

Alexandria

The PNC Parkway Classic offers three opportunities to race on April 26. The Parkway Classic 5K race at 8 a.m. starts and finishes at Oronoco Bay Park and winds through the streets of Old Town Alexandria. Also starting at 8 a.m., the 10-Miler begins at Mt. Vernon Estates and ends in Old Town. Children can participate in the Kid’s Dash, which starts at 10:30. Registering early will ensure that your children receive one of the limited number of spots available for the 600-meter dash.
