Kitchen Islands

Islands were hot items in kitchen renovations, with half of the renovations adding or upgrading a kitchen island. Island storage (98%) and overhead lighting (92%) set the norm, with new appliances like microwaves and dishwashers being included in the island (52%). Blue and gray were the top color choices for contrasting island cabinets (39%), with white and wood being popular for contrasting island countertops (29%).

Kitchen Remodeling Costs

People are spending more in kitchen renovations, with major remodels coming in around $35,000 as a nationwide average in 2019, up 17% from the previous year. A minor remodel remained the same at approximately $8,000.

Kitchen Styles

Farmhouse is out and transitional is in, followed by contemporary styling. Those who upgrade their backsplash are adding a new twist: a feature wall, like installing the backsplash from countertop to ceiling (11%) or up to the upper cabinets or range hood (63%).

Kitchen Colors

Neutral palettes prevailed in this study, however, blue in kitchen walls is an emerging kitchen trend from 2020. It appeared in 7% of kitchens, as compared to 5% last year.

Other Kitchen Trends Features

Hardwood floors were shown to be the most popular flooring material (29%), with vinyl/resilient flooring coming in at 14%. Engineered quartz rose slightly in popularity as a countertop material (51%).

Reasons to Start a Kitchen Renovation

There weren’t any surprises in the reasons people chose for wanting to renovate their kitchens, although the statistic for kitchen deterioration jumped from 17% in 2019 to 27% in 2020. This is the highest level Houzz has seen in its five-year history of tracking these motivators. They attribute it to the aging household stock in the U.S. Here is a breakdown of what survey respondents said:

Kitchen Renovation Triggers

37%        Wanted to do it all along and finally have the means

34%        Can no longer stand the old kitchen

31%        Wanted to personalize a recently-purchased home

27%        Old kitchen deteriorated or broke down

13%        Recently inspired to make certain changes

Major Kitchen Feature Upgrades

Most homeowners replaced major features in their homes, as shown in these kitchen remodeling trends. Countertops and backsplashes were the most popular upgrades, along with sinks.
